A Broward County man accused of killing his wife and stepdaughter and shooting his grandmother in the arm faced a judge in Fort Lauderdale on Tuesday morning.

Eric Montgomery, 28, was short on words in court, but a police account of what happened on New Year’s Day is full of allegations against him.

"It says that Mr. Montgomery did kill Alexis Hamilton by shooting her multiple times with a rifle," Judge John Hurley said.

Hamilton, who was Montgomery’s stepdaughter and a 19-year-old college freshman who was home on winter break, was the first to be shot inside the Lauderhill home on Northwest 55th Avenue, police said.

Investigators said Montgomery’s next target was his wife, Natalia Montgomery, 34. Police said Eric Montgomery’s 73-year-old grandmother first tried to hide and then tried to act as a shield.

"One of the rounds went through Miss Hamilton and then struck your grandmother in the arm," Hurley said.

The suspect’s grandmother survived, but Hamilton and Natalia Montgomery died.

Spent shell casings were found throughout the home, police said.

"You were allegedly out of control, and they tried to calm you down. You ordered people out of the house. When they wouldn't leave, you came out with a gun, a shotgun or a rifle," Hurley said.

The police report said two more people witnessed the shootings, including the Montgomerys' 7-year-old daughter.

The judge ordered Eric Montgomery held without bond and appointed a guardian ad litem for the girl, who is now staying with relatives.
